Hard Water and Hair Loss: What Your Water Actually Does
Hard water, chlorine, and mineral buildup are frequently blamed for hair loss — and the reality is more nuanced than either "it's a myth" or "it's definitely your water." What water quality actually does is damage the shaft, not the follicle. Here's why that distinction matters.
01Hard water and shaft integrity
Hard water contains elevated calcium and magnesium ions that deposit on the hair shaft as mineral coating — the same mechanism as limescale in a kettle. This coating increases friction between strands, increases breakage risk, and dulls the hair's appearance. A 2016 study confirmed hard water increases tensile strength loss (breakage) compared to distilled water controls.
Hard water damages the shaft — the visible hair. It doesn't kill follicles or cause AGA. For people with thinning hair (fewer shafts, each one matters more), shaft integrity is more relevant than for someone with dense hair who can absorb the breakage.
