If you're getting a hair transplant abroad—whether in Istanbul, Medellín, or Tijuana—you'll need to fly home during the critical early recovery period. Here's everything you need to know about traveling safely while protecting your new grafts.
During the Flight
- Stay hydrated: Cabin air is dry; drink water and mist your scalp
- Avoid alcohol: Dehydrates and thins blood
- Don't wear hats: Nothing should touch recipient area for 7+ days
- Skip overhead bins: Let others handle bags to avoid bumping your head
- Move periodically: Reduces swelling that can migrate to forehead
What to Pack in Carry-On
- Saline spray (3.4oz or less)
- Prescribed medications (antibiotics, pain relief)
- Gauze pads for any minor oozing
- Neck pillow (U-shaped travel pillow)
- Post-op care instructions from your surgeon
- Emergency contact info for your clinic
At Security
Your scalp may have visible crusting, redness, or small scabs. Security officers might ask about it. A brief explanation ("I had a medical procedure") with your doctor's note resolves any concerns quickly. You will not be asked to remove anything touching your head.
